Overview
What the actovia command does, and how it reaches the desktop app.
actovia works on the computer the desktop app runs on. Install it with
npm install -g @actovia-ai/cli or as a standalone binary — see
Installation. Every command and option is in the
command reference.
actovia status # the desktop app: version, lock, LAN, devices, updates
actovia doctor # the same as checks, each with a fix
actovia open # launch the desktop app
actovia app update # install the newest desktop app (macOS)
actovia app restart # quit and start it again
actovia lock # lock it now
actovia logs -f # its log, as it is written
actovia backup # its database backups; `backup create` makes one
actovia tasks # Philharmonic's scheduled tasks
actovia quota # what Claude Code and Codex report of your plan
actovia usage # what the models have cost
actovia pair # pair a phone: a QR code in the terminal
actovia devices # list paired phones
actovia skills # browse and install Agent Skills
actovia update # update the CLI itselfWith these, a Mac that runs Actovia with no screen attached can be looked after from a phone and an SSH session alone.
Talking to the desktop app
Everything but skills and update talks to the desktop app on the same
machine, at http://127.0.0.1:60223. That is what lets you look after a
computer you reach only over SSH.
The app-lock PIN. Commands that act for the person at the computer —
pair, devices, lock, app quit, app restart, and app update while
the app runs — ask for the app's app-lock PIN (Settings → General →
Lock & Privacy) and trade it for a ten-minute pass. Commands that only read
(logs, backup, tasks, quota, usage) ask for it only when the app is
locked. status never asks: it answers while the app is locked. The PIN is
read from the terminal only — never from an argument, a variable or a pipe. A
correct PIN also unlocks a locked app. After ten wrong PINs the app stops
accepting it from the command line until it is typed on the app's own lock
screen, or the app restarts.
Versions. pair and devices need Actovia 2.1.0 or later; status,
lock, app quit and app restart need 2.2.0. An older app is reported as
too old, with where to get a newer one.
Updating the desktop app
actovia app check says whether a newer Actovia is out. actovia app update
(macOS, Apple silicon) downloads the release, checks it against the release's
SHA256SUMS and its code signature, quits the app, swaps the new one in —
putting the old one back if anything fails — and reopens it. A release without
checksums changes nothing. On Windows the app updates itself; on Linux, install
the new package from the releases page.
Skills
Skills install into ~/.actovia/skills/<slug>/, the same directory the
desktop app reads, so a skill installed here is available in the app at once,
and the other way round. actovia skills alone opens an interactive browser;
search, install, list and uninstall are for scripts, and take --json.
Updates
actovia update installs the newest version the way the CLI was installed:
through the same package manager (npm, Bun, pnpm or Yarn) for a global
package, or, for a standalone binary, by replacing it with the new release's
binary after checking it against the release's SHA256SUMS — a download that
does not match, or a release without checksums, changes nothing.
actovia update --check only reports.
The CLI looks for a new version at most once a day, in the background, and mentions it under a command's output.
